Shush®

Create a Favourable Learning Environment
Common classroom noises like scraping chairs, children talking and whirring computers all affect a child's ability to learn.

Recent research by the OTICON FOUNDATION, Classroom Acoustics: A New Zealand Perspective confirms that Shush® Acoustic Linings do a very effective job of absorbing such noises, creating a better classroom learning environment for children.

Create an Improved Working Environment for Teachers

  • Vocal Strain is a serious occupational hazard for teachers. It occurs because they need to speak for long periods of time at an elevated voice level.
  • Installing Shush® Acoustic Linings in classroom ceiling reduces learning area noises, allowing teachers to speak at a more normal level.
  • The result is less stress on a teacher’s voice.
Are Quick and Simple to Install
  • Light and easy to handle.
  • Inter-locking tongue and groove system means tiles simply slot together.
  • Simply staple to existing ceiling or wall (battens will be needed where there is no existing lining).
  • An average classroom ceiling can be lined in less than a day.

What does the Oticon Foundation Report Conclude about Classroom Design?

  • “Good acoustics should be a prime design consideration for all new classrooms”.
  • “All new primary school classrooms should be designed with absorptive ceilings”.
  • Schools should “prioritise classrooms with untreated high or vaulted ceilings for retrofitting of acoustic ceiling tiles” and “ensure that relocatable classrooms meet the same acoustic standards as permanent ones”.

What does the Oticon Report Conclude about Shush®?

  • Six classrooms, rated as acoustically poor, were modified by installation of Acoustic Ceiling Tiles. Shush® Acoustic Linings were used as part of this experiment in two of the six classrooms. Once these modifications were made, the class teachers were surveyed. The following comments relate to all three acoustic tile systems used;
  • “Overall the teachers and students were enthusiastic about the improvements”. Comments from the teachers included “less noise, more on-task behaviour, reduced frustration, better hearing and the ability to successfully work in small groups on different tasks”.
  • One teacher commented that this was the first year in her classroom that she hadn’t suffered from voice strain.

Why do Shush® Acoustic Linings absorb sound?
The system of holes in the surface of the tile allows sound to enter. Once inside sound bounces around and is absorbed by the soft fibrous core.

Shush® Acoustic Linings Flame Retardant Properties

Shush® Acoustic Linings have been tested to AS 1530 Part 3. They have been produced for decades and have excellent early fire hazard results of 0 spread of flame and 5 smoke developed making them suitable for almost any building.

Shush Acoustic Linings are suitable for use in classrooms, places of assembly (eg. school halls), music rooms and most commercial buildings.
